The growth of blood vessels in tumors is one of the most important, if not the most important tumor-host interaction associated with tumor progression and metastasis. Yet, a multitude of cells, molecules and mechanisms way beyond classical tumor angiogenesis control the complex interactions between the tumor and the vascular compartments to regulate tumor progression and metastasis.

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has implemented the SPP 1190 in recognition of the increasing importance of tumor-vessel interaction research in current basic biomedical science. The SPP 1190 provides funds for 17 research groups from all over Germany (see map) which are all actively involved in the molecular analysis of the complex interactions between the tumor compartment and the vascular compartment. The program was initiated in January 2006 for two funding periods of three years each.
